Welcome to the snow. Planning a first ski or snowboard trip can feel like a lot, so here is exactly what to expect, from booking to your first chairlift, in the order it happens.
The golden rule: take a lesson your first time. Our certified instructors use the PMTS Direct Parallel® method, which teaches modern movements from the start instead of relying on the old snow plow wedge. You will learn faster and have more fun. See beginner lessons.
1. Before You Arrive
Buy online. All lift tickets, rental equipment and lessons must be purchased online before you arrive. We do not sell lessons or daily tickets at the walk-up windows.
Sign your waivers. Complete your digital release of liability online during checkout so you can skip the paperwork at the resort. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian to sign.
Dress in layers, and avoid cotton. A synthetic moisture-wicking base layer, a warm mid-layer such as fleece, and a waterproof jacket and snow pants.
Pack the essentials. One pair of wool or synthetic ski socks (never layer two pairs), waterproof mittens or gloves, lip balm, and a helmet or winter hat. Goggles are highly recommended. We do not rent clothing, coats, pants or goggles.
2. Arriving at Welch Village
Arrive early
Plan to arrive at least one hour before your scheduled lesson time. Group lessons run on a strict schedule and late arrivals cannot always be accommodated.
Parking and gearing up
Boot up at your car, or bring a small gear bag into the Main Chalet. Lockers and cubby areas are available for shoes and bags.
Check in
Scan your email barcode at the outdoor ticket windows at the Main Chalet to get your physical lift ticket. Booked a lesson? Head to the Lesson Window in the Main Chalet.
Download your barcode before you leave home. Cell and wifi reception at the base area is weak.
3. Getting Your Rental Equipment
The fit
Your boots should feel like a firm handshake: snug, but not cutting off circulation. Your heels should not lift inside the boot when you bend your knees. Speak up if something hurts. A bad boot fit ruins a first day faster than anything else.
The gear
You will be fitted for boots, skis and poles, or a snowboard and boots. Helmets are highly recommended and can be added during online checkout. Standard ski rentals are reserved online in advance; snowboard rentals are first come, first served at the ticket windows.
4. Your First Lesson
The magic carpet
Most beginner lessons start in our dedicated beginner area, served by a magic carpet. It is a slow conveyor belt that carries you up a gentle incline, so you can get comfortable sliding and stopping before you ever get on a chairlift.
Pace yourself
Take breaks. Learning a new sport takes real energy, and most first-timers are more tired than they expect. If you are fatigued, head into the chalet for a hot chocolate and a snack, then go back out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a lift ticket if I am only taking a lesson?
Yes. A valid daily lift ticket or season pass is required to participate in all lesson programs and to access any snow surface. We offer beginner packages that bundle the lesson and a full-day ticket together. The Learn to Ski ages 4-8 lesson also includes a full rental package (skis, boots, poles and helmet).
Can my friend or family member teach me?
Friends mean well, but we strongly recommend a professional lesson. Our instructors are trained to teach safe, modern fundamentals using the PMTS Direct Parallel® method, which prevents bad habits and reduces frustration. Only Welch Village instructors are authorized to teach on our property.
What happens if I am late for my lesson?
Group lessons run on a strict schedule so every guest gets their full time, which means late arrivals cannot always be accommodated. Plan to check in at least one hour before your start time.
Do you rent clothing or goggles?
No. We rent hard goods only: skis, snowboards, boots, poles and helmets. Please bring your own water-resistant winter apparel.
How much is a beginner lesson?
Learn to Ski ages 8+ is $109 and includes a 2-hour lesson and a lift ticket. Learn to Ski ages 4-8 includes a 1-hour lesson, a lift ticket and a full rental package.
Where do I go when I get there?
Main Chalet. Ticket windows are located outside on the hillside patio, the rental shop and Lesson Window are inside, and the beginner area with the magic carpets is just outside. Any staff member in a Welch jacket can point you.
